Hello I hope you can help me. Ive just updated my old PC that was on Windows
98 SE and was a bit messed up so I got XP Pro and Installed it. It got near
enough to the end where it just kept rebooting and wouldnt continue setup.
and it came up saying theres an error.
It looked a bit like this:

System Setup Log (C:\WINDOWS\setupenr.log)

Error:
Setup could not register the OLE control C:\WINDOWS\system30\initpki.dll
because of the following error:
DllRegister Server returned error 2147942667 (8007010b)

xxx

Error:
The Signiture for Windows XP Professional is invalid. The error code is 3.

The system cannot find the specified path.

BTDT: Save yourself a lot of grief and install xp pro on a new drive. Copy
over whatever you want to save from the old 98 disk.

The problem can be that the directory does not exist or that when
unregistering the dll it didnt match the one there (service does not
correspond to executable) or even that the tool unregistering was left over
from 98 or is from xp pro or from somewhere inbetween especially if "98 was
messed up"

You mentioned that "98 was messed up". Do not expect xp to fix problems in
98 especially if a prior upgrade failed.

Sam: Depends on system... it it a notebook? An old desktop with not much
memory and slow cpu (pentium 3 or whatever)? Is this an OEM copy you got
cheap or the more expensive retail version? If you install XP, activate it
and decide you want to upgrade the motherboard you might get hassled and be
calling in for gates approval on every upgrade. I you put out $200+ for XP
no sense putting in on a crummy systems that cant handle it.

If you got a nice system that is pretty well maxed out, clear off the disk
drive (save whatever you want) and do a clean install selecting NTFS
partition, format, then activate and restore whatever documents and stuff
you want. You will have to reinstall your apps. I assume you checked
before hand to verify that important apps in win98 still run in XP.
