Hello,

I'm just replaced a HDD in my 4yr/o gateway laptop, and am attempting to
re-install XP Pro via the CD.

Setup runs great until I get to an early step- Partitioning the HDD?! It
shows there are 475000MB available, but won't let me create a partition, or
just [enter] and move along.

I'd appreciate any pointers! Thanks!

Does the BIOS show the full size of the new hard drive?
What service pack (original XP CD, SP1 CD or SP2 CD) is your Windows CD?
What was the size of your old hard drive?

Thanks JS-

The new hard drive is a 120G WD- the old was a 30G Toshiba.

Looking at the Windows CD- I believe it's an original (Version 2002).

BIOS shows this: (I don't think I interperet it well)

IDE Adapter 0 Master [120034MB]
IDE Adapter 1 Master [CD-ROM]
(below that)
Total Memory: 255MB

In the setup partition setup screen where I get trapped- the unpartitioned
space is 694097MB?

What do you think?

Clearly there is something wrong, the BIOS shows the drive size correctly
but Windows does not.
Take a look at the Clean Install setup guide at these sites and see if it is
of any help.

From Michael Steven's: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html
more info: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm
and: http://www.theeldergeek.com/clean_installation_of_windows_xp.htm
also: http://www.bootdisk.com/

Also do you have a disk with the drivers (motherboard, Video, Sound, Network
Card, Etc.) if not you will most likely need these during the install.
