XP Pro services

hi
this last couple of weeks i've been having a problem with some services
within xp pro.
for example i noticed that system restore was disabled. i set it to
automatic and left it. a day or two later i saw that it was disabled again.
doesnt matter how many times i reset it, after a reboot its disabled again.
also having some issues starting services - for example windows firewall/ics
- i get the error:
error 1058 - could not start the .............service on local computer.
service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no
enabled devices associated with it.
again, can set to auto and within a few minutes is disabled.
same goes when i installed zone alarms sec suite - the true vector service
cannot be started.
if anyone has any ideas, i would really appreciate it
many thanks
steve

Those symptoms are typical of a computer that is infested with malware
of some kind (virus/trojan/spyware).

What antivirus and antispyware software do you have installed? Are
they fully up to date with their definition files not less than 10
days old? Have you done a complete system scan with each of these
programs recently?

Get a second opinion regarding possible malware infestations by going
to at least one of the following free scanning sitesL
Bit Defender http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com
Kaspersky Online Scanner http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan
WindowSecurity.com TrojanScan http://windowssecurity.com/trojanscan
Webroot http://www.webroot.com/

Good luck
