XP Pro Service Pack 2 download interrupted

Initiated (the recommended) Download of Service Pack 2
(for XP Pro) It ran for approx 60 mins, then seemed to
stall for ~ another hour. Cancelled download. Received
message that something had to be reset or rebuilt or
returned (not sure of verbiage) to a previous setup (?)
System automatically took over to restore. Not the normal
XP System Restore. Everything came back different; lost
connection to internet; cannot recover; system runs VERY
slow, what's left of it. Ran XP System Restore. Now afraid
to rerun the download. Is the long timeframe to be
expected? Anyone else experience this problem?

Order the free CD or pick it up in some computer superstore.
