XP Pro Repair

My system runs very slow, crashes and locks up. It's not a virus and system
restore doesn't solve the problem. I think it might be Ad-Aware related. I
tried to repair Windows using the XP install cd. First it asks me to choose
which volume to repair. I pick 'c:\windows'. Next it asks for an
administrator password. I have no password set up so i just hit enter. This
doesn't work. So i created an administrator password under my login, then
went back to repair and this still doesn't work. After 3 attempts it kicks
me out. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Please do not say that the problem is with AD-Aware but it is "spyware"
related. Spyware/malware/hackware are programs that get installed onto your
PC without your knowledge. These tend to make your PC slow and/or do things
you do not expect. AD Aware is a good utility that helps you to "remove"
these "bad" programs from your system.

Here are a list of other "good" utilities to help with this clean-up:

Spybot: Search and Destroy 1.3
CWShredder

Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1 (carefully)
HiJackThis

All these, along with AD Aware SE, work well and do/should not be adding
more spywares to your PC.

Right click on "My Computer" and pick "Manage". Expand "Local Users and
Groups" and click on the "Users" folder. In the right hand pane right click
on "Administrator" and pick "Change Password"

I believe the problem is Ad-Aware related, not spyware... the difference
being spyware is not locking my system. I blocked an Ad-Aware/Ad-Watch event
unknown to me and the system hasn't worked right since. I've uninstalled and
reinstalled Ad-Aware. I've changed the sys admin password twice, tried to
repair each time using the new passowrd and it didn't work. How can I get
around the password in the repair portion of the install CD since it doesn't
seem to be linked to the Windows XP Administrator password? Is the repair
password the same as the CD key from the install disk?

Which "repair" function do you want? Do you want the Recovery
Console? That's what you are describing - it's what you get if you
select the first "repair" option from the CD, and yes, you'll need to
put in your Administrator account password. However, I can't for the
life of me figure out how you think the Recovery Console will help you
in this situation.

If you are attempting a repair install, then don't select the first
repair option. Select the install Windows option. When presented the
list of volumes to install to, you can select the existing
installation and then press R to repair it. Doing this does NOT
require a password. I don't think it will help either, though, as it
won't eliminate any existing settings or spyware/adware/malware on
your system.
