Thanks for the response. I tried following your steps, but they don't match
what I see.
I have to boot with the XP SP1 cd, it will not boot without it.
When booting from the CD I receive:
- Windows Setup
- Setup copies many files to the disk
- I receive the Welcome to Setup window
- I select Enter to start the Windows Setup
- I accept license agreement
- I receive a list of partitions to select, but there is no "R"
repair option.
The only options available are
Setup Windows, ie "Install"
Create a partition
Delete a partition
In an earlier repair attempt:
- I selected Enter, ie "Install", I don't recall seeing the repair option.
- I selected "keep the current file system intact" option.
- I then received a msg a C:\\Windows folder exists and if I continue the
Windows installation will be overwritten. All files, user accounts, etc will
be lost if I continue.
- I quit the install at this point.
- I receive a warning popup window advising the Win XP Setup was not
complete and Setup would need to be run again.
Please advise.

Motherboard makers web site for updated BIOS.
2. Perform a Repair Install by following the step by step below.
When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:
To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.
Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows
installations.
Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to
start the repair.
Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not
press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue
as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will
remain intact.
Do not immediately activate over the internet when asked, enable the XP
firewall before connecting to the internet. You can activate after the
firewall is enabled.
Control Panel - Network Connections. Right click the connection you use,
Properties, and there is a check box on the advanced page.
Reapply updates or service packs applied since initial Windows XP
installation. Please note that a Repair Install from the Original install XP
CD will remove SP1 and / or2 and SP2 will need to be reapplied.

I tried to reboot my XP Pro 2.5 mhz system and it fails. I didn't notice any
problems before this, except when I tried to reboot it did not shut down for
awhile so I powered down. I now receive a msg:
Invalid BOOT.INI file.
Booting from C:\\Windows
I then receive a msg the boot failed and I should boot in safe mode or "Boot
from the last good config". I've tried "last good config" and safe mode,
both hang shortly after I select them.
I created a std boot.ini file as described in an earlier post on a cd and
tried to boot from cd, did not work.
I have two disk drives, C is 60 mb and D is 200 mb. The C drive is
primarily the system and D is primarily my data. I would like to keep the C
drive data, ie email, IE links, data files, etc, if possible.
I have my XP SP1 installation CD. I started installing XP SP1 but didn't go
thru with it since I didn't know if this would preserve my C drive data. I
tried the repair option and can see the C drive, but don't know what to fix.
Any suggestions how to recover my system and keep the C drive contents intact?
