XP Pro Pagefile problem

Hi,

I'm running XP Pro on an (older) Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop.
(Cel. 466mhz with 320mb Ram)

With 320mb of ram, I feel that I don't need too large a pagefile,
so I've been trying to set it to a "custom" value.

I tried setting it to min. 256mb/max. 256mb ... and when I rebooted,
even though the parameters where you set the pagefile remained
what I'd set them to, the pagefile was set to the "recommended"
478mb.

So, I set the pagefile to 0 (none), and rebooted. The pagefile
did get deleted, as I expected.

Next, I set the pagefile parameters to min.128mb/max. 256mb.
When I rebooted, the pagefile again went back to 478mb, even
though the values I put in remained as 128/256. ???????

It appears that I cannot use the "custom" set feature. I have 3
other computers running XP Pro (2 desktops & 1 laptop), and
DO NOT have this problem. I can set the Pagefile to anything I
want on those 3 computers.

I did a "Google Groups" search to see if there was any
relevant info to be had, but none seems to match my problem.

I'm completely stumped, and I consider myself a *very*
experienced computer user (over 25 years experience).
I've even looked through the registry to see if there was
something there I could tweak. My current settings are
correctly stated in the registry (C: pagefile.sys 128 256)
but I still get the 478mb pagefile.

"Temba, his arms wide .... XP Pro Pagefile"
"Mirab, with sails unfurled ...."

One point you may have missed is that after changing settings you *must*
click on the Set button before going further.

And while 256 is a good initial size, I would set the Max a lot higher -
it probably will never expand into that range, but you need it against
contingencies. Read up at www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm
