XP Pro network with DSL and Router

We recently upgraded to SBC DSL. I have a Speedstream 5100 DSL modem and a
D-Link DI-604 router. As long as the DSL modem is on, our computers cannot
see each other over the network. It's an ethernet network, by the way, using
CAT-5 cables. Any suggestions?

I'm not familiar with either piece of hardware but my best guess
is that your modem (the Speedstream) can also act as a router. If
you have some documentation that came with the router find out
how you access it's web based management interface. Look for a
setting enabling DHCP on the modem. You need to turn this off in
order to use your D-Link router. You can only have one device on
the LAN running the DHCP service.

Do you have the computers hooked up like this:

1. Main telephone line to DSL modem
2. DSL modem to router
3. Router to individual PCs
4. File & Printer Sharing is Enabled on all PCs
5. If router has a firewall built in - it should be on
6. Windows Firewall or locally installed software firewall turned on for
each PC (Not both though!)

Also, you might want to check this article:

http://www.efficient.com/subscriber_networks/faq.shtml

Click on the link at the top "Accessing the web management
interface...". If you're ISP set this up to have the modem act as
a router then you might want to conside turning the DHCP service
off on the D-Link effectively turning it into a switch.

The modem is not able to act as a router.

192.168.0.0 to 192.168.0.255) as a trusted zone otherwise file and printer
sharing won't work
