I recently installed a new computer running xp pro into
my home network, configured for home networking and
cannot access the network. The other computers ar
running win 98 and xp home. They can see each other and
read each other. They show the icon for the xp pro
machine but cannot read the contents of the shared
folders.
Further, I can ping the other machines from the "pro"
system but cannot ping the pro system from the others.

Hi.

XP Pro won't respond to ping requests if the ICS (Internet Connection
Firewall) is on.

Open the control panel.
Open network connections (I use classic view).
Right Click your connection and select properties.
Click the advanced tab.
Uncheck the checkbox...."Protect my computer...etc"

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply - firewall unchecked and no
improvement. Computer will not even ping itself

It sounds like you might have the Windows XP firewall
enabled on your XP Pro machine. Go to the start button
and click on "my network places". On the left hand side
there is a box that says "Network Tasks", click on "View
Network Connections" underneath that. In the new window,
you will see an icon called "Local Area Connection".
Right click on it and choose "Properties". In
the "Properties" box, click on the "Advanced" tab. If
Internet Connection Firewall is checked, then click on it
once to un-check it. This should allow your other
computers to see your XP Pro machine on the network.
Hope this helps.

"Computer will not even ping itself"

Is that from pinging 127.0.0.1 ?
