Brand new installation. Only XP Pro, Norton, Video card, and DSL installed.
Each time on boot-up...bang...locks up at the blue screen.
Machine is: 1k mhz, 1024 gig DDR ram, 60 gig hard drive, Soyo MB, PNY Verto
5700 VE 256 mb video.
Can anyone offer a solution? Any ideas?

Kill Norton. Other than that, can you boot into safe mode, have you tried
the recovery console, have you tried a repair install? Is there an error
message on the blue screen of any sort?

Screen gives several options to boot in, one of which is 'safe', which I
couldn't fix the problem from. Another was 'same last known working config'.
which works after 3 tries. Don't know about (1) recovery console, or (2)
repair install.
There is no message at all on the blue screen. Only that the small blue
squares moving across the screen, left to right...stop...and boot-up stops.

Pretty simple. Insert your XP disk and boot from cd

then repair your xp installation. This will force you to reinstall all
drivers, but is likely to fix your problem

Best of luck

Hi,

Thanks for the detailed feedback.)

1. HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q307654

2. Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q315341

3. That is not what one considers a blue screen (commonly referred to as
the BSOD).

You didn't mention Service Packs, so am guessing they weren't included
within the install. If so, I repeat kill Norton.

You are needing to see what is causing this. This can be accomplished by
either:

Start/Run/msinfo32/Components/Problem Devices and/or: Start/Run/eventvwr.

The lock up is actually at the 'black' screen (sorry), with "XP" showing. I
have down-loaded all updates (from MS web) and loaded SP2, from CD. Have
gone thru the bios 4 times, making changes, for better and worse. Have gone
into device manager, my computer, system, etc. Can't solve the issue.
About ready to re-install...!!???? Start over.
My head is sore from the scratching. Not very familiar with XP. New
install. Have been WIN98se for many years.
