XP Pro is Slowing way down

Anyone have this situation? XP pro is running at a painfully slow speed. I
Cleaned up old file and deleted all offline content, then defraged.
All DMA channels seem to be working.
The machine reports that both 2.6 ghz processors are running fine.
All memory pariaty checks up 1/2 gig.
Just slow, very slow, and over night, as when I stoped using this system
last night I did nothing. Today it was like an old 286, unzippping files took
several minutes.
I am a C++ programmer so I think I would understand if a hardware issue was
involved, but what a mistery.

Go to Run / msconfig / Startup tab . Uncheck all item that are not
absolutely essential to run on startup. See if that will speed things up.
