XP Pro instantly logs off

Hi
we have a very strange situation where a Windows XP Pro machine boots up
then dipsplays the user logon screen, when the user clicks on the name the
system starts to load settings, then the screen flashes and the systems says
"logging off" and goes back to the logon screen. I have tried safe mode
using both user and administrator logons but the same happens, cannot get
into command prompt for the same reason.
Any ideas before I am forced into a system restore and some loss of data and
settings?

I'm not sure about your original problem (of which there might be an easier
fix) but try a repair install first before doing a system restore.
