XP pro installed over WIN 2000, can't log on

Hi all

Did an upgrade of win2000 to XP Pro on my IBM T30 laptop. When I get to the
log on screen and I try to log on (I have admin rights) with my old user name
and password, it won't recognise the password.

This is the only identity on the computer, I don't have an alterantive to try.

The only thing that happened during the upgrade was that it didn't recognise
the driver for 'Deterministic Network Enhancer Miniport' and I told it to
ignore that.

The upgrade was exceptionally slow though, took a couple of hours to chug
through, instead of just 30 minutes as promised on screen.

Any suggestions welcome!

Just read that if the install is interrupted, all user passwords are reset to
random values. Maybe this is what happened. But mine is an admin password so
I wouldnt expect it to be effected.

God knows what the old 'admin' password is. Guess I will have to get one of
those password reset programs? - could cost more than the XP upgrade :(

I do not know if this works on XP Pro, but in XP Home, you can boot
into safe mode and the 'Administrator' id is then visible. This by
default has no password. You should set one when you get the other
fixed. Then you can change your users password for something definite.

Thanks friend. I found the problem. If you interrupt an install (which I did)
and then continue it later, for some bizarre reason known only to MS (they
will no doubt cite security), the install will set all of the user passwords
to random values. The only way to log on, is therefore as administrator.

Which I did, and reset my user password again. Weird. And should be in the
user manual - How to Interrupt an Install If It is Taking 3 Hours and What
This Will Mean for Ruining Your Night.
