A file critical to system initialization, such as Smss.exe, may be missing or corrupted

Possible problems: Cd-rom (DVD-ROM) drive may be causing it. Try another drive if available.
Other possible problems: Bad stick of memory, boot sector virus
Try running a memory tester such as:

I would also suggest booting off the CD into the Recovery Console and running chkdsk /r
