Hi,
After formatting PC & installing xp Pro I have lost sound, PC cannot detect
a sound device. I installed drivers from the motherboard's cd but made no
difference the sound device is still not being detected. Before installing xp
Pro I had xp home and the sound was working ok. Please advice on what to do
next I haven't the foggiest as to what is going on. Thank you for your help

Hi Elly,

Right after powerup repeatedly press DEL, F1 or F2 (depending on brand) to
enter BIOS.
Be carefull not to change anything.
Browse the menu's and look for Sound device.
If disabled, set it to Enabled.
Save and Exit BIOS settings.
PC reboots and should find Sound hardware.
Then provide Sound driver.

I've checked Bios audio is enabled. I think that the drivers I installed are
not the right ones, because my computeris over 5 years old it might need more
updated ones. motherboard is ECS P4S5A ATX chipset SIS 645, I have tried the
website for ECS and downloaded some drives which I think might be the ones I
need but I am unable to installed them, the file does not have a set up
folder, I don't even know if they are the right ones it is a bit confusing I
don't really know that much about these things. Please help any suggestion
is highly appreciated. My question is if the drivers I downloaded are the
correct ones how do I install them withou the set up file. I downloaded SIS
7012 PCI Audio driver. Thank you for your help

Did you receive a CD with the PC that has drivers on it? If so load the
driver for the sound card. What brand of PC and the model number?

Hello Elly,

You can install drivers without a setup.exe file.

Assuming you have downloaded the right driver !!!
If it is zipped, unzip it into a folder.
Then, right-click This Computer - Manage - Device Manager.
In right pane, look for unknown devices with Exclamation marks,
if none, click [+] in front of Game, Video and Audio devices.
When found, remove these AUDIO devices by Select and Delete.
Leave other entries intact.
Now, in this pane, at the top line, right click your Computer name,
and Scan for Hardware Changes.
The New hardware wizard will find your sound card (surprise :-) ).
Proceed, do not let it search internet or media but browse to the folder
where you unzipped the driver earlier.
Watch the [OK] button ... (may be greyed out).
It may be necessary to browse through subfolders until the [OK] button
becomes highlighted (wizard found installable driver).
Click [OK], driver will be installed. You may need to reboot the system.
Turn up the speakers, you should be set now.

Enjoy!
