Hi,
I've just installed XP Pro over Home after formatting the HDD and everything seems ok except device manager shows problems with:-

Multimedia Audio Controller
SM Bus Control
Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

The only symptom that is obvious at the momemt is no sound. I've tried updating drivers, roll back drivers (non backed up), uninstalling and rebooting to see if hardware wizard would find them. But all it said was .."could find non better than those installed".
I've been into 'Sounds' and everything (volume, audio etc. radio buttons for adjustments) is greyed out (unavailable).
I don't know how to find out which drivers I need to look for on the net.
Can anybody help, please!!!!!!

TIA

Are all the deives set to able in the BIOS,you might also open device mgr.,
open each device,select,uninstall,then close-out,shutdown computer.XP will
reinstall them upon restart.

Don't let XP pick the driver; select the other option and then 'have disk',
browse to your driver files, OK 'unsigned drivers' (nonWHQL drivers).
Install in this order: SMBus, Video, Audio. There are some alternatives to
this procedure - the hardware manufacturer's web site should provide
instructions.

Hi Andrew & Philips, both good info. Have found updates and new chipset drivers at manu. web site. I can't find out which video card is in the comp? No paperwork with it. Any ideas?

Hi Gary, No, I think it's an integrated graphics card (Intel 845G) but not sure which or what to download or change to rectify problem.

Hmm, it should be either ATI or NVidia, AGP, PCI or onboard (S3xxx?)... you
have to check the video chip if you can find it.
You can either download a graphic card id utility from each of the 3 above
(ATI, NVidia, S3) or just peek in the PC for the graphics card. You might
call the manufacturer for informations or check their web site.

Hi, thanks for replying but have found video driver. I say found, I've had it for two days now but didn't know it had to be installed in specific order along with chipset (sm bus) and audio drivers:
1st==sm bus
2nd==video
3rd==audio

It was a Intel* video driver by the way and when it wouldn't load, I thought it was the wrong one. I'll have to thank the person/genius who let me know the order of installation.
Hope this helps somebody else out there too,
Regards,
connie
