xp pro icons underlined

I have taken delivery of a new machine with xp pro (oem) installed on
it. The icons on the desktop are all underlined which I find annoying.
Similarly when I use explorer everything in the right hand pane is also
underlined.

Can someone please help me turn this annoying feature off please
