XP Pro / Home permissions problem

Hello

I have a laptop with XP Home and a desktop with XP Pro. The desktop is
cabled to a DLink wireless router which also provides a wireless
conncetion for the laptop. All I want to do is to be able to share my
desktop's root (C with JUST the laptop... I do not want any of the
other 2 computers on my network to have any access at all. After
messing with folder permissions I have ran into a problem due to the
fact I can't grant access to any users or computers except for the
desktop and my username-- meaning my laptop is not showing up under
locations in the select users or groups dialog. The laptop is seen in
the MSHOME workgroup and I can even open my desktop folders over the
network with it.

You cannot assign permissions on the pro box based on users on the home box.
Your only options are the local computer or a domain. You need a matching
user account and password on both. Disable "simple file sharing" on the pro
box if you haven't already.

Would not help. The way to do what you want to do, is to use a domain
server that can hold a user database.

The particular OS doesn't matter. You need a domain to centrally manage user
accounts, otherwise each computer maintains it's own individual database of
user accounts. Microsoft solved the problem of multiple-logons for
workgroups by allowing "pass-thru" authentication, where permissions to a
shared resource can be given or denied to local user account, then someone
can log on to another computer with exactly the same username and password
and won't be prompted to suppy credentials when accessing that shared
resource (or denied access as the case may be). If you want a share to be
accessible only to you, make yourself a unique account on both computers,
don't tell anyone else your password, log off when you leave (and/or set the
screensaver to require a password). Then set permissions (on the pro box) as
you see fit.

XP Pro has the full compliment of share and NTFS file permissions (on the
security tab). XP Home does not. XP home basically sucks for anything other
than a single-computer home environment (they did do a nice job of providing
for multiple users).
