XP Pro Home network help Needed :)

Jamie

Hi. I have my network kind of working. We have a mix of XP home, 98,
and my main disk servers are red hat running samba. Everything was ok,
until i updated my system to xp pro.

With my firewall up, i dont see anything with the workgroup. Take the
FW down, and suddenly the other servers are visible.

The Redhat boxes are the master browsers.

Here is the 'rowstat status' output from the offending xp pro machine

This is the output with a red hat server and a xp home machine from
the xp pro box. I dont know why it says there is a domain on MUSUME
(probably the xp pro box) which is probably part of my problem

with the firewalll off

What ports do i need to let through my firewall (some kerio version)
if this is part of the problem. ANd how do i turn the XP Pro machine
(which i think is repoting as a domain) to report as a workgroup
server (if this is indeed a problem.

If you need more info let me know. Hope someone can help :)

Thanks

Jamie,

If you are using a personal firewall, and you see a difference in performance
between having the firewall on, and having it off, it's certainly part of the
problem. You're going to have to learn how to configure it properly. Knowing
that it's "some kerio version" may be part of your problem. I advise you to
start with advice from comp.security.firewalls, and learn how to set Kerio up
properly so you don't have this problem.

The browser subsystem is a very tricky thing to deal with, without experience
(sometimes, even WITH experience) ;) The fact that you've thrown a *nix
computer, acting as the master browser, into the mix, is just going to make this
a bit more challenging. Please read my article:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html>

On of the most interesting browser problems can come from having Windows 9x (95,
98, ME) and Windows NT (NT, 2000, 2003, XP) systems together on the network.

And by the way, to Windows programs like browstat, the terms "domain" and
"workgroup" may be used interchangeably.
