XP pro hangs up at loading?

I have XP Pro edition , and recently have had a problem when I reboot, the XP
hangs up when it says " starting XP' and the little color scroll thing
stops... so basically I have to try and reboot again.... I dont have a XP Pro
disk to try and fix.
I recently got a computer 2nd hand with XP home edition, with all the disks.
Is it possible to just yo reinstall XP home edition? Or will I lose
everything on my HD? Any help would be greatly appriciated.

A Clean Install is destructive.

Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration?
A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222/en-us

Otherwise when you try to boot and it seems to be going no further does
Ctrl+Alt+Del bring up Task Manager/

Is your computer a desktop or laptop? What is the make and model. Do you
have another computer? If yes, what is the make and model of that
computer?

Do you have data files you need to recover?

Hope this helps.

Are you able to eventually start the PC? If so, go to Event Viewer and
see if it provides information on what is causing a problem. If the PC
does not ever start, you'll need to show it to a technician.

XP Home can't be installed over XP Pro.

About your second-hand computer: The standard (and wise) practice is to
erase the hard disk and reinstall all the software. That's the only way
to be sure that the computer is free of malware and configuration errors.
