XP Pro Error Messages

--When I boot up XP, I get to the log in screen but as soon as I enter my
profile, I am bombarded with one .exe application message after another (i.e.
explorer.exe, mDNSResponder.exe, Isass.exe, etc.). They all ask me to click
ok to terminate or cancel to debug. Regardless of what I do nothing helps.
Eventually I get to my wallpaper with access only to Task Manager via
Ctrl-Alt-Del. From there I can browse, launch msconfig, etc, but nothing
else.
--I also cannot boot into safe mode or last known good config -- all bring
me to same point as above.
--I backed up by attaching drive to my other pc (IDE to IDE) and copied
folders/files to an attached external hdd. Sometimes it took me a few tries
because I would get cyclic redundancy error.
--While attached I also scanned it with Norton - clean. I scanned with
adware se, but that would keep hanging.
I did use the XP disk to run recovery console. Chkdsk said all was ok.
Chkdsk /p said one or more errors found.
Any thoughts?

Cyclic redundancy errors and errors from chkdsk suggest a problem with the
drive. Download a drive diagnostic utility from the hard drive
manufacturer's web site. That will create a bootable floppy or CD. Boot
from that and run the diagnostics.

It was a smart move to backup the data, but don't wait for the appearance of
problem indicators. Always, always have a full and complete backup.
