XP PRO disk clean won't function

I have been trying to run a disk clean for last two days
and it just starts, goes about two green dashes down the
progress bar and hangs there indefinitely. What can I do
to fix this short of doing a total restore?

How long have you waited? If never done before it takes several minutes
depending on how many files Disk Cleanup has to define, sort, and catalog
so you can then select which ones to delete. BTW I run Disk Cleanup
automatically and unattended through the WindowsXP Task Scheduler. For MY
system I use this command in Task Scheduler. For my use I have it run each
morning around 2am

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cleanmgr.exe /sagerun:1

This looks obtuse I know but one needs to first read this article from
Microsoft to understand the term 'sageset" and "sagerun" which basically is
just a term in the registry that Disk Cleanup recognizes as a sort of
instruction and options setting.

Save on Desktop.
Double click the icon once downloaded.
The icon can then be discarded.
