XP Pro COM Port problem...system lock-up

We are attempting to use a serial device on a Dell
Optiplex GX260 with XP Professional. When we attempt to
connect to the device using the manufacturers software or
Hyperterminal, the application locks-up and will not
close. The computer requires a reboot to get the
application to clear.

We have tried to use Hyperterminal on two other identical
Dell computers and the same problem occurs. Does anyone
have any ideas about this?

Go to run,type:Msinfo32
Try the hardware tab,then conflicts,there's a forced
system components with info also.Look thru the tabs for
related areas, also open ADM in control-panel,event viewer
look thru the system events as to what is/has taken place.

I have looked through the event viewer, no entries for
Hyperterminal, or anything to do with a com port error. No
hardware conflicts with the com port.

We even installed a USB to serial converter, com3, and it
does the same exact thing when connecting to it. No errors
in event viewer and no conflicts on the port.

Is there a Microsoft update that might have caused this?
All of these computers are set up to auto-update and
install when an update is available.
