XP Pro - Cannot install programs, service packs ... anything

Using XP Pro.

I tried to install XP Pro SP1a, and the installation hangs
when it gets to "Creating restore point".

Tried to install anther application, but it also hangs
when it gets to "Creating restore point".

Tried to create my own restore point(would be my first
restore point) - XP hangs.

I have administrative access etc. How do I fix this
problem?

Disable the System Restore tool, restart Windows, re-enable the System
Restore tool.
