XP Pro Boot problem, eg 'Won't Boot'

greetings
my college-student daughter had XP Pro running on a
newish Dell P-4, quite happy, no problems for many
moons.
suddenly (a shot rang out) (No, just kidding) the system
refuses to boot; it will display the splash screen and the
little activity animation begins.... then... PC powers-off and
starts up again. never gets any further than the activity
animation.
help please.
