XP Pro and Linksys Wireless USB adapter

I borrowed XP Pro(without SP1) from a friend and clean installed with all the
necessary drivers. Everything was working perfectly. However, I could not
update due to authenticity. So I bought a personal copy of XP Pro(with SP2).

I formatted and clean installed. Thats when this problem occurred. When XP
Pro boots, it doesnt detect my Linksys USB wiresless G adapter even though
all necessary drivers are installed. However, XP does recognise other USB
devices such as thumb drives and mouse. I have to manually unplug/plug
adapter for it detect.

There is no problem with adapter as it works perfectly with other computers
with XP Pro(SP2). I worked with Linksys Tech Support for some time and tried
using different USB ports, installing with drivers alone, updating XP and
even formatting/reinstalling XP. However, none worked. They suggested
contacting Microsoft as they had "customers with the same issue which were
resolved after contacting Microsoft" and that it had something to do with
"USB bandwidth changing after installing/upgrading OS" and problem with "the
way XP communicates with the hardware".

Any help would be appreciated Thanks.

FYI, only 2 USB ports are used: mouse and adapter. When XP boots, the
adapter is not detected. HOWEVER, on rare occassions, the mouse is not
detected on boot but the adapter is i.e. I have to unplug/plug the mouse back
in for it to work. These problems were not present on my first install of
XP(friends copy) but only when I reinstalled my own personal copy.

Btw, I have tried all 4 rear USB ports. The USB ports are on the motherboard,
not on hub.

The installation of drivers and software for the adapter was done correctly.
I installed it flawlessly on 2 other computers with XP Pro and they were
working fine. I did it on my first installation and it was working fine as
well.

I have formatted/reinstalled XP a few times and reinstalled it correctly.
The LED lights on the adapter are on and stable. However, device manager
doesnt see the adapter connected when I boot into XP and I have to
unplug/plug the device.

Email support:

I bought XP from a retailer, and my computer was put together, there is no
vendor for me to go to.

If your WinXp is identified as OEM, via the product code, then other than
contacting Linksys again, apart from groups, which apparently cannot help,
then your only alternative would be to pay the support fee to MS.
I have used this route in the past, and because of the nature of the
problem, they did'nt in fact charge me.

PS presumably there is no updated Firmware for the Linksys?

J try this if you have the drivers for the MB. Disconnect any USB
peripherals then go to the device manager and uninstall all your USB
controllers and if anything is in other uninstall them till other does not
appear. Do not reboot. Then install your cd with the drivers for your
motherboard and run the setup. Reboot when finished.

PS If you are using a usb mouse, turn computer off and use a ps2 mouse
before unistalling the usb drivers.
