xp pro and home network

I have 3 computers, 2 of which are xp pro the other is 98se. All are
connected via ethernet to a linksys router. I can utilize my dsl internet
connection from all three. All computers can ping the router. I can ping
from computer 1(XP) to computers 2(XP) and 3(98). I can ping from computers
2, and 3 to each other, but NOT to computer 1. As a result any file/printer
sharing does not work on computer one, but does with the other 2. Simple
file sharing is not turned on, and I am using "classic" for the "network
access: sharing and security options".

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Sharing and security options have no effect on pinging.

The most likely problem is that a firewall on computer 1 is blocking
access from the other computers. It could be XP's built-in firewall
(Internet Connection Firewall or Windows Firewall) or a third-party
firewall (Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm, PC-cillin, Sygate, eTrust, etc).

Steve,

Thanks for the response but, I have turned off xp's firewall on all machines
in my network because I thought that was one of my initial problems, it
wasn;t and I find myself here today.

Any more help would be appreciated.

Check for other firewall programs, like the ones that I listed above,
on computer 1. Some antivirus programs and "Internet security"
programs contain firewalls that aren't obvious at first glance.

Try pinging computer 1 from the other computers by IP address and by
computer name. If both type of pings fail, a firewall is almost
certainly responsible. If pinging computer 1 by IP address succeeds
and pinging it by computer name fails, make sure that NetBIOS over
TCP/IP is enabled on all computers, as shown here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
