XP Pro - after slecting a user keeps returning to login screen

This is a strange problem. This is a stand alone PC running XP pro. The user
login screen comes up ok and displays 5 users, which ever user I select in
normal or in safe mode, it comes up loading user as normal but then switches
immediately to logging off and then just returns to the login screen!

Has anyone got any idea what this may be?

Andreas,

If this is affecting all the users then it is possible that there is
something in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup folder.

It is safe to move any files located within this folder to another 'backup'
folder.

Have you got the recovery console installed? If yes, then select it from
your boot menu. If not just boot up off your XP install CD and on the
"Windows XP Professional Setup" menu, select "R" for Recovery Console.

Lets see how that goes....if its not the cause don't worry....there are
pleanty of other things we can try.

Cheers,

Thanks for that, I have a problem though, The Pc is not set to look at the
CD for startup and the customer's Pc has a password on the bios and does not
know what the password is, so I can't change the startup. How do I get around
that?

The BIOS password can be blanked by pulling the battery on the Motherboard.

Hi,

Here's another one very similar. A different PC on switch on says something
like 'windows needs to be activated do you want to activate now?'

If you say yes it shows a screen saying 'windows already activated' when you
click ok it just returns you to the lonin prompt.

This seems like the same problem butthis time the activation window comes
up. I tried the fix formt he prveious problem ... that made no difference ...
any ideas?
