XP Pro, A cable modem, DHCP/NAT router, and several computers sharing files

I am trying to get my three computers running XP to share
a cable modem (this part is working). I then want two
computers to share files and printers on the third.

Some computers can't find others (for example, "ping
computer1" returns "can not find host". As far as I can
tell all are configured exactly the same.

I would settle for just getting it all working, but would
then like to add security so that not eveyone with
physical (wired and wireless) acces to the LAN can get at
the files and printers.
