XP Paging files

Hi. I'm new here and I hope you don't mind if I jump in and ask a question?
I recently installed XP Pro as an upgrade to Windows 2000. All seemed to go
ok, except now when I boot up, I get a message that tells me that I either
have no paging file or it is too small. I followed the instructions to
change the settings, but when I do it won't retain the settings. I have
clicked the "SET" button and rebooted many times, but it still won't retain
my settings. I have one 20 gig drive, and one 160 gig drive that is split
into two partitions approximately 75 gigs each. Also I have set up a user
for me and my wife (both as administrators), but when I boot, it just opens
Windows. There is no login screen to select a user. The only thing that
comes up is the page file message. I would greatly appreciate any guidance.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Sincerely,
Tosty

Here are a few possible reasons:
- The "System" account does not have full access to "C:\".
- You already have a folder called "C:\Pagefile.sys".
- The "System" account does not have full access to this
registry key:
HKLM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

Post again if you need further instructions on how to check and/or
fix each of these.

Hi Pegasus. Thanks a million for responding. I would really appreciate it
if you could explain how to check/change those settings you spoke of. Thank
you very much for your time.

- The "System" account does not have full access to "C:\".
* Click Start / Run / cmd {OK}
* Type this command: cacls c:\
* What do you see?

- You already have a folder called "C:\Pagefile.sys".
* (needs no explanation)

- The "System" account does not have full access to this
registry key:
HKLM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
* Launch regedit.exe.
* Navigate to the above key and right-click it.
* Check its permissions. Do you have "Full access" to it?

To stop it from automatically logging on

1. Go to Start | Run and type in: control userpasswords2 | Ok.

2. On the Users tab, put a check mark in the Users Must Enter A User Name
And Password To Use This Computer check box and then click OK.

It should stop at the welcome screen or the standard windows 2000 style
login screen where you input user name and password. If you want to use the
Welcome screen instead go to Control Panel | User Accounts. Select "Change
the way users log on or off" and then put a check mark for use the Welcome
Screen.

Any Norton Home products installed?

Hi Pegasus. And thanks again.
First: I could not find a "Pagefile.sys" folder or file on the root
directory of C.

Second: When I typed in "Cacls c:\" This is what I got:
c:\ BUILTIN\Administrators:F
BUILTIN\Administrators:<OI><CI><IO>F
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:F
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:<OI><CI><IO>F
CREATOR OWNER:<OI><CI><IO>F
BUILTIN\USERS:R
BUILTIN\USERS:<OI><CI><IO><special access:>
GENERIC_READ
GENERIC_EXECUTE

BUILTIN\USERS:<CI><special access:>
FILE_APPEND_DATA

BUILTIN\USERS:<CI><IO><special access:>
FILE_WRITE_DATA

Everyone:R

Third: My registry doesn't have "HKLM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\Memory Management" The closest I could find was
"HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\System\CurrentControlSet\Control". There is no
subdirectory of "Session Manager\Memory Management". The only subdirectory
choices I have under "Control" are "Class", "Print" or "VIDEO".
Any suggestions would be welcome.

Sincerely,
Tosty

Thank you very much Rock. I did as you instructed for my logon problem, and
everything seemed to go smoothly. I'll know for sure when I finally log out
and reboot, but I'm waiting for a reply from Pegasus on my other problem
before I try it again. Thanks again. You people are the best!

Sincerely,
Tosty

A few other things to check -
* When you went to change the settings what drive did you select for the
paging file ?
* Was there sufficient space on the drive you chose, and was that space
defragged.?
The paging file requires its chosen size to be on contiguous space. ie If
you (or the system) decided on a 500 MB paging file size, that space must be
in one continuous area of the disk.

Geoff

Hi Geoff. The drives were partitioned and formatted with a clean install of
Windows 2000 just a few days ago. At that point I installed XP Pro as an
update. The 20 gig drive contains the operating system and the 160 gig
(partitioned into approximately two 80 gig drives) will contain data, so
there should be plenty of contiguous space available. I tried to set the
paging files for all three drives unsuccessfully. Thanks for your help.

Or is the CA security suite installed?

Hi Rock. Could you please explain what the "CA security suite" is? I just
did a typical upgrade installation of XP when I installed it. Thanks for
your help.

Computer Associates security suite. One poster in here recently had a
problem were he couldn't set the page file. He tracked it down to having
this security suite installed. Norton products have been known to cause
problems with the paging file too.

Thanks Rock. That should not be an issue (at least not yet anyway) because I
haven't installed my anti-virus software (or any software for that matter)
yet, until I get this figured out. Thanks again!

Thank you all for your kind support. I finally got the paging problem fixed,
but I had to take rather drastic steps to do it. I wiped out the hard drive,
re-partitioned and re-formatted it, and then did a fresh "full" installation
of XP Pro instead of an "upgrade" over Windows 2000. I think there must have
been some kind of conflict between Windows 2000 and XP Pro, because once I
wiped it out and did the fresh installation, all the problems went away.
Thank you all again!

Ahh to bad you had to go through all that but I'm glad it's working for you
now, and thanks for posting back.
