XP Operation Terminated by Lsass.exe

Windows XP came on my daughter's ThinkPad T30 which she
got about a year ago. But now it will not run more than a
few minutes. The following message appears: "LSA Shell
(Export Version) has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience...". The
system then is shut down, apparently by Lsass.exe which
reports error code 1073741819.

What can we do about this? At the very least we need to
retrieve some important data files from the hard drive,
but XP does not stay up long enough.

Your timely help will be much appreciated.

Can you get to the event log? What about if you start in "safe mode"? The
event log may tell the process that is creating the error.
