XP only boots in Safe Mode

Hi

I noticed that my PC was running slowly and that it was
using lots of Memory, so decided to reboot. After reboot I
only had my desktop displayed, no icons, no taskbar, but
task manager indicated everything had fired up OK.

Rebooted and started in Safe Mode with Networking and
everything seemed OK in Safe Mode.

Rebooted for a normal startup and only got a very low
resolution screen with no icons and no taskbar.

Rebooted in safe mode with networking and again everything
working OK in safe mode.

Decided to try and restore to a couple of days earlier.
Machine restarted, but again, with low resolution, no
desktop icons and no taskbar.

Tried to restore to various dates all with the same
symptoms.

Machine will only run in safe mode.

Have the very latest firewalls and virus protection, so
I'm at a loss.

Any help that can be offered that I can take home and try
after work would be appreciated.

Regards

Hi

No, as it boots in VGA mode (albeit without the taskbar
and and desktop icons) I assumed the video drivers should
be OK. Nothings been changed in relation to the video card.
