XP on more than one computer?

I've got a problem: I've got an iPod mini, a desktop running Windows ME, and
an old Windows XP home edition version 2002 from a (now) defunct laptop. I
need to put them all together so that I can update ME to XP, so I can use my
shiny new iPod. However, everyone at my house is telling me that XP has some
copy protection that prevents it from being installed on more than one
computer. Is this a load of bull? I'd really love to avoid having to buy XP
again over this bloody iPod, so is it safe for me to update my desktop with
the XP disc from the dead laptop?

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on and then
install it on the new computer. If it's been more than 120 days since
you last activated that specific Product Key, the you'll most likely be
able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less,
you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.
