XP on a new drive with boot files?

A

Adam

I have installed an 80GB drive successfully, installed
XP, but want to delete (format) the old drive (which also
had XP). XP is running perfectly fine. XP has now labeled
the new drive as E:. At the boot screen, I don't want a
dual-boot system; just the new installed XP. It's giving
me 2 versions of XP boot options. I'm worried if I format
the old drive labeled C: I will lose system boot files!
How do I transfer OR create these boot files to the new
drive? I simply want one version of XP running off the
new 80GB drive (which is master) and use the old drive as
a slave. Note: both drives are using the same ribbon in
one IDE slot. Is this the problem? I'm willing to start
all over if I've really messed things up....but please,
help!

Hi,

Locate ntldr - that will tell you where the boot files are.

Control Panel/System/Advanced tab/Startup & Recovery settings, click the
edit button. Copy/paste the text of boot.ini into a reply to this post.

Hello again. What is ntldr? Is this a directory? Here is
my boot.ini:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=signature(4c9ac30c)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)
\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
signature(4c9ac30c)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)
\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WXP="Microsoft
Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Hi Adam,

When you boot, do you choose the first or second entry to load your system?

Hi Adam,

Ok, This is what you want it to look like:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=signature(4c9ac30c)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)
\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
signature(4c9ac30c)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)
\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Remove this part (which is the reference to the old installation):

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WXP="Microsoft
Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Then file/save and exit. That's all. Incidentally, this also indicates that
the boot files are on the same drive as the WinXP installation is. If you
swap the drive positions, you will need to run a bootcfg repair from the
Recovery Console.

I choose the first entry. I want to delete the second
entry which is the old XP installation from the old
drive. Is there a line in the boot.ini I'm supposed to
delete? Also, after all this is done, do I make my new
drive the master and not the slave drive as it stands
now? Does it matter at all? Thanks again Rick for your
help!
