XP not seeing HD after installation

I have a computer with 2 HDs. The larger size HD is a master and is used for
OS, programs and data files. The smaller HD is a slave and is used to backup
data files from other HD--it has no OS.

I was using Win 2000, but had crash problems. Started getting messages that
Win files were missing or corrupt. Attempted repair with Win 2000 CD (older
version than on computer). This action screwed up computer so that it kept
resetting before going into Windows.

Had a copy of XP that I planned to install; so I started installation.
Installation formatted larger drive, losing all contents on drive. I thought
I could at least copy data files from other drive after installation. Win XP
sees drive but shows no contents. When I click on drive in Win Explorer, Win
says it needs formatting. I don't want to format drive because I don't want
to lose data on drive. BIOS sees both drives and labels them appropriately
as master and slave.

Do you guys have any ideas how I can make XP see the drive contents without
reformatting or do you have any other ideas how I can save the data on the
smaller HD? TIA

1.Go to control panel-->......-->computer management to try to find a way.
2.Take it to another computer to see if it is good.
3.Turn off your computer and go to sleep.........
