I have just put a saved cd containing many jpegs into my cd drive and it
fired up but it would only show the first few pictures in thumbnail before
it seizes up and will not display the other pictures. What could be causing
this?

Did you verify the files as part of the burning process? If the files were
corrupted during the burn, then the disc will behave exactly as you
describe. Have you tried the disc in another computer? Is the drive that
is not reading the disc the same one that was used to burn it? What program
did you use to burn the disc?

If you switch the view to something other than thumbnail, can you then open
the files on the disc? This is another indication that the files were
corrupted during the burn process.

Also, copy a few of the unreadable files via Explorer from the CD drive to
the Desktop & see if you can view them that way.
At least that will give an indication as to whether they're corrupt or not.
Occasionally I have what appear to be legit jpg files which cannot be
opened.
Usually I opt to open them with Irfanview & then rename, save them to the
Desktop, delete the originals and they work fine after that
