XP Networking Issues

I have for the past week, been trying to network 2 PC's into a workgroup via
a LAN. I have trawled through all the treads on this forum, and have review
most of the MS knowledge base.

Both are Dell's, a Dimension 8200 & an Inspiron 9300 laptop. Both are
running XP Prof - SP2, Connected by a un-managed switch. Dell support cannot
resolve my problem either, but comment that they are getting numerous calls
about the same issue.

The network is configured and the workgroup is displayed, and both PC's can
see each other from "My Network". However when I try to map drives or locate
shared folders, I get a security message, along the lines of "you do not have
permission to access this computer, contact your network administrator".

I have undertaken the following on both Pc's: -
Enabled the Guest account.
Setup an Admin user and password in the administators group.
Disabled the MS firewall, and under the advanced tab, unchecked the box
under the local Area Network.
Enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP
Simple security / permissions is turn off. So full permissions can be
accessed.
uninstalled the network items, and re-installed.
Diabled McAfee firewalls, and antivirus software.
established Permissions for shared folders are FULL and set to the group
EVERYONE
Run the network diagnostics and all is ok.
Re-configured a home network (numerous times)
Manually set up the IP addresses, sub-mask, and gateway.
Ping the local PC - OK
Ping the other PC - Fails (using IP address or //name)

The laptop has 2 other network configurations setup: -
Wireless and 1394.
This laptop is used to connected to 2 other networks at different locations.
A wireless network using a workgroup and an office Domain. These both work
perfectly, without any hassle.

The dimension has BT braodband configured, and is needed as the gateway.

Life should not be this difficult.
Help.. and thanks in advance.

Hey, exact same problem. No solution. I suspect it is in the set up of the
network making the new computer the server (in peer to peer) of the network.
Let me know if you get help.

Go to administrative tools-open local security policy-local policy-user
rights assignment
The first policy there is user rights assignment
click on this and add the user name you are using

This should solve the problem.

Where in the Administrative Tools is "open local security policy"? It isn't
listed in the options on my XP Home Ed. system.

I am not sure if it is available only in XP Pro. Try to locate Poledit.exe in
the windows directory. If it is there you can run it and open the local
security policy to do the same thing.
