XP Network Setup Wizard changes network card ID

I'm running XP Pro with SP1. When I use the Network Setup Wizard to put
my PC on my network, it alters the network card ID by changing the first 0
to a 2 and also seems to do something similar at the end of the number.

The network itself runs fine, but I am using software that is node-locked to
the network card ID, and when the card number is changed, the software no
longer runs.

Does anyone know how I can set up my machine to join a network without
changing the card ID number?

What happens if you manually configure the client?

Assuming that 'Network card ID' = MAC address, you can change this by
editing the registry. See:
