XP network file copy

I right clicked, copied, and pasted a file from its original location
to a new one on another machine in order to back it up and in the new
location there is a shortcut file. Does this mean that the contents
of the original file were not copied over to the new machine and that
there exists merely a pointer to the original location on the new
machine?

Right click on the new file. Examine it's properties: location and size.
That should give you your answer.
