XP Multibooting question

I want to do a hardware upgrade (PCI card with Firewire and USB 2.0) to my PC
that is running Windows 98 and Windows XP.

Looking at the PCI cards, they seem to all require at least 98SE for them to
work. Since I want to have my Windows 98 utilizing it (along with XP) I need
to upgrade my 98 to 98SE. (I want to start utilizing swapable external hard
drives)

So, what files do I need to back up (boot.ini, etc) in case my 98SE
upgrading changes them so I don't end up with a disaster that botches my
multiboot of XP?

Or is this just an impossibility and do I need to just wipe everything and
do a reinstall?

You could copy boot.ini, ntldr, bootsect.dos and ntdetect.com to an XP
folder. Then go ahead with the upgrade. After it's
accomplished just boot to your WinXP CD and use the Recovery Console to
repair the Boot.ini. First, copy the files from the
WinXP Folder back to C:\ if they were removed. The command you will be
interested in is Bootcfg /rebuild.
Take a look here for
more info on the Recovery Console.
