XP midi latency and Dxi

Dell Inspiron 4150 running XP-he

I have a laptop running XP-he which I bought expecting to use as an audio
work station using midi instruments.

I recently learned that the midi integral to XP has rediculous latency. If
I play along to an XP midi click all of my record takes are delayed and out
of sync. So, if I play along thinking the new parts are in time, they
aren't. I was advised that only DXi softsynths will play with a short
enough latency to be able to add new parts in time.

Where do I find freeware DXi softsynths... and how do I go about installing
them? Is there any other way to fix this problem.

This latency is really dissappointing. I have too much invested in midi
composition software to just use kludge fixes like shifting every track I
record just to bring everything in sync.

Thanks for any help or links.

Been there, done that. I figured experts in XP may have insights that were
more specific to XP.

Thanks for the response.
