XP-Me network

Hi I have connected two computers, WinXP and Win Me, thru
crossover cable. On Win XP, I get "a network cable is
unplugged" after few seconds. Win Me computer says
network is unavailable. The indicator lights on both the
computers flash frequently.

Any help shall be highly appreciated.

Are you certain it was a crossover cable? They tend to be
marked VERY clearly on each end as "Cross-over cable".
A regular patch cable won't do.
If you know it's a crossover, well, some cables are bad.
Also, some ports on network cards are bad. Jiggle the
cable to see if a connection comes and goes. If the
connection comes on at all, it might still be the cable
(at the end you're holding) or it could be the card plug.
