I have loaded XP onto and older PIII laptop with 64MB of ram. When I boot,
the system check confirms "64MB OK". The computer runs very slow and in
checking “My Computer Information – Status†it shows only 32MB memory
detected. How do you set the OS to recognize the entire installed RAM. I know
I know iI need more memory and will purchase it, but for now the OS will not
recognize the ram I have.

Does the system share ram with the Video card? On a second note - 64M of
RAM is hardly sufficient to get the system to load much less do anything
once you reach the desktop.

Microsoft recommends at least 128mb of ram for xp (which is low),but
64mbs,who knows what could take place with that nos.

Undoubtedly it runs very slow. Regardless of whether it reports
63MB or 32MB, either is way too little for XP. The official
minimum is 64MB, so it's almost certainly recognizing it all (or
it probably wouldn't run at all), but even that is way to little
to run it at acceptable speed.

How much you need depends on what apps you run, but almost
everyone who does more than play solitaire need at *least* 256MB.

The on board video is probably taking the other 32 mb.

You really think a computer built with p3 chip and an onboard memory-sharing
vidcard would use 32 MB of RAM? Not likely. . .

Yes, so what's your explanation?

My thanks to everyone that responded… I added a 164MB of RAM and all the
probloms went away, in fact the system is screaming! I only added 164MB
because the system specs says I have a 192MB Max.

I sent the following message to a Memory sales company and ask the question.
“I am in need of upgrading the memory of my older ASUS L8400B laptop. In
reading the specs of the computer data sheet and your web page the specs
state "Memory 192 MB Max" I need as much memory as possible to run MS-XP. Is
your 256MB compatible with the L8400B and if so what happens to surplus
memory over 192MB?†can anyone answer this, my computer is a ASUS L8400B.

Thanks again
