xp loses modem

I have a clean install of xp - it detected the external modem fine. Now
however, if I switch on with the modem switched off xp doesn't have the
modem in Hardware Manager. If I turn it on before power up it's there and
works fine. How can I make it keep the modem all the time?
thanx in advance

Basically you can't as this is the way Windows XP is designed to work. The
modem must always be turned on before you start your computer otherwise
Windows will assume the device is not present and will remove it from the
device manager to free up the resources. It takes a while to get used to
turning the modem on first, and if you're like me you'll forget a lot, but
eventually you won't even give it a though. :)
