XP Logon Problem: "Domain not available"

Guest

I have a Windows XP Pro SP2 laptop that recently joined an Active Directory
domain. When the laptop is connected to our network in one of our offices, I
have no problem logging into to the selected AD domain. However, if the
laptop is disconnected from the network, I frequently (but not always)
receive the following error message: "The system cannot log you on now
because the domain DOMAIN_NAME is not available." No amount of rebooting
will resolve the problem and logging into a local account on the machine and
then attempting another log on to the DOMAIN_NAME while disconnected doesn't
help. This is a critical problem because all of my programs and settings are
only accessible from the DOMAIN_NAME account. Prior to the AD migration, I
had no trouble logging into my DOMAIN_NAME account while disconected.

Any ideas on either why this is happening or how to fix it?

Thanks!

Check the DNS settings on the laptop, it is probably looking at a DNS server
other than the Active Directory DNS server. It must use the AD DNS server
to log onto the network and authenticate.
