XP logon dissapearing??

All user icons at logon on screen have gone..

anyone had this problem
possible security breach?
windows corruption.. more likely
this is the 3rd laptop i have seen this on,, but have no idea what causes it.
Sick of formating hhd's

going mad.

i have had an image burnt of the hard drive, all information in tact.

Have you tried a system restore. Had that problem once, it
is how I got my accounts back.
