For how long will an XP pro PC allow logging into to the domain , after
disconnecting from the domain.

i presume it takes from the cache. how long does it allow
to login from the cache information after disconnecting from the domain

Hi Sridhar,

AFAIK, WinXP accepts the cache credentials to let the user login only to the
local system in the absence of the DC. Are you able to login to the domain
and access the network resources even in the absence of the DC?

Hi abhilesh

I am sorry let me correct my statement. by disconnect what i meant is assume
a laptop which is connected to a domain and then used at home, then i am able
to login to the domain and get the same desktop. ofcourse i cannot get access
to network shares. but i am able to still login into the laptop as the domain
user even at home. how long is this kind of login allowed ?

Hi Sridhar,

though I do not have the exact answer to your question(no. of days or
months), you can login to the laptop as long as WinXP doesn't "flush" your
cached credentials. When we login to a domain, WinXP maintains a copy of
your password and let us login to the local desktop even if the domain is
unavailable. I have even login to a system after a gap of weeks(with domain
unavailable) and am able to login. So the answer is "at least few weeks".

BTW, the desktop you are getting is stored on the local computer(your
laptop) and is not being retrieved from the network.

it'll work forever. what *won't* work forever is your computer account
- most domains will be set to expire this after 30 days or so of
inactivity - so you'd probably be able to logon locally with cached
credentials, but not logon to the domain. if this happens, your domain
admin needs to reset your machine account.

can u pls. tell me where do i go to check this policy setting in the DC

I have another problem. When I try to log my computer into the domain, i
have no problem, but when i´m disconnected from the network, and I try to log
on appears the message "the system cannot log you on now because the domain
XXX is not available". What am I supposed to do?

Thanx

In the drop box on login screen change to the local computer instead of the domain.

i´ve tried it but didn´t work... It says something like "invalid
username/password".
I only have problems when i´m not connected to de domain, but is strange
because other computers with the same configuration can log on with the
domain selected in the logon window without being connected to the domain...
I don´t now what to do... Thanx for your help.

I am having the same problem and am desprate for a solution. Any help would
be great. I am assuming the cached login is corrupt?
