XP login problem

I'm looking at a PC for a friend who cannot log in for some reason. All 3
user names, plus Administrator - when entered - simply loop back to the
login screen. There's a brief flash of "loading user's preferences" or
whatever, but it's gone too quick to really note.

No passwords are used on any account. I'm *told* that nothing has changed
within the PC since it was built a couple of years ago...

Anyone offer any help on this?

Well if you havent actually managed to log in to the system then it might be
worth trying last known good configuration option

Was malware recently removed from this system? Something may have altered
the Winlogon userinit entry in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
