XP Locks up at Splash Screen

Having problem with windows xp locking up at the splash screen.

The system has GoBack installed but it has been disabled. Even with
GoBack installed I can not see the windows installation on the hard
drive using the XP disk. I can however boot in Safe Mode and it comes
up with no problems. I have also tried to boot with the /SOS in the
boot.ini but the system locks up after showing the version of xp at the
top of the screen. This is a critical machine and needs to be up asap
so any help would be great. I am trying to not have to slick and load
the drive due to critical data on the system.

I've had luck getting back into these machines by running msconfig and
disabling all start up items and services, then by trial and error re-adding
the services until you find the corrupt one.
I had the same thing happen recently with a corrupt install of ZoneAlarm

I have tried starting in Safe Mode, Diagnostic Mode, and with all
services and startups disabled. And some other variations using
MSConfig.

Ender,

Have you disabled any Windows services?
Can you get a copy of your Boot.ini file and then paste a copy into a reply
here ?

Take a look at this article.

I suggest you retry tapping F8 key as pc starts up; then select the option
"with bootlogging".

Then if it fails to load, reboot to Safe mode, get, then later paste back
here a copy of Ntbtlog.txt file, which should reside in C:\

Also, If you have not already tried it, try the startup option "Last Known
Good Configuration".

P.S. for Ender:
You said <q>

If you used MSCONFIG, make sure you did NOT disable "Windows / Microsoft
Services". In the Service Tab of MSCONFIG, un-check the check box "Hide All
Microsoft Services" near the bottom of screen window.
Review those listed for Microsoft Corporation. Be sure you did not turn all
off.

Also, since you'd want your Antivirus program to be on, be sure you did not
turn it or any of its services off.
