I have a 3-4 year old Sony Vaio laptop loaded with XP. It's worked fine until
the other day when I notice my eSet protection software had expired. I
downloaded McAfee through my ATT ISP since it's free. Since then I have not
gotten the Vaio to work. The machine is locking as soon as it completes
booting up. What can I do?

I would start by rebooting into safe mode as it sounds like you're having a
problem with a startup driver here. Use the following link to help you out:

McAfee may be "free," but so is AVG, AVAST, and any number of other, better,
virus protection schemes.

And they won't lock up your computer.
